Organist and Director of Music Ministries
Philosophy: As a staff member of Avon
Congregational Church, the Organist and Director of Music Ministries (O-DMM) is
part of a collegial ministry team and understands his/her work as a ministry to
the congregation. He/she is a person of faith, at home theologically in the
United Church of Christ, and brings a vitality and flexibility to the
leadership of this ministry. With an appreciation for both the traditional,
classical music of the Christian church and more contemporary musical forms,
he/she helps the congregation to express, deepen and expand its spiritual life
through music.
Description:
1.
This is a half-time position, approximately 20 hours per week, inclusive
of administration, services, and rehearsals.
The Organist and Director of
Music Ministries (O-FMM) provides overall direction and leadership for the
church's music ministry, and coordinates all aspects of the music program to
ensure effectiveness in planning, communication, and performance of all choirs
and individuals.
The O-DMM reports to the
Pastor and to the Music Committee, and will participate in an annual review of
his/her work in accordance with the church's Personnel Policy.
2.
The O-DMM shall:
a.
Rehearse and direct Gallery Singers (adult choir).
b.
Direct or provide for the direction of the Celebration Ringers (adult
handbell choir), Youth Choir (singers from Grades 3-8), Joyful Noise (handbell choir
for Junior and Senior High), and Alleluia Choir (singers from K -Grade 2).
c.
Accompany or provide for the accompaniment of all musical groups.
d.
Be responsible for the selection and performance of organ and choral
music for the scheduled services of the church: i.e., weekly Sunday services,
special seasonal services such as Christmas Eve, Maundy Thursday, etc., and
including any ecumenical services.
e.
Communicate regularly with the Pastor, including, as far as possible,
attendance at meetings of the church staff.
f.
Meet regularly with the Music Committee, giving appropriate direction
and support to their work.
g.
Provide coordination and supervision for other music personnel in the
church, whether volunteer or stipended, including soloists, instrumentalists,
director(s) of the handbell choirs, and director(s) of youth and children's
choirs if applicable, meeting at least quarterly throughout the church year
with other directors to ensure effective planning, communication and oversight.
h.
Submit all needed information for weekly bulletins and monthly
newsletters in a timely manner.
i.
Be available to play for weddings and funerals, or, in the event of
unavailability, assist in securing a substitute. When playing for such
services, communicate in a timely manner with families or individuals involved.
j.
Select and purchase all music supplies.
k.
Oversee the organization of music supplies, records, and files.
l.
Oversee maintenance needs of the organ and pianos, as well as other
instruments the church may own, and keep the Music Committee regularly advised
of such needs.
m.
Actively work at recruitment for the development of the Gallery Singers
and any other choirs for which the O-DMM may assume responsibility.
n.
As time and expertise/interest allow, teach the congregation in areas
of sacred music and related worship arts, through educational programs.
