What We Believe

Avon Congregational Church is part of the United Church of Christ, a denomination with a rich history. Formed in 1957 from the merger of four earlier denominations, it is a ďunited and uniting church.Ē Committed to social justice and to sound theology, each local congregation is autonomous.  Although connected to a larger body, we are free of restrictive and limiting ties, thus able to govern ourselves as we see fit.

At the same time, we are keenly aware of the how we are bound together with all churches and with the world. Therefore everything we do is done with consideration of the welfare of the entire global community, and with a strong sense of our responsibility to care for all of Godís creation. Above all, we believe that God is still speaking, that God is doing a new thing in our midst, and that faith, hope, and love are ultimately that which is eternal.

Statement of Inclusion

ďA new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.Ē (John 13: 34-35) ESV

In keeping with the life and teaching of Christ Jesus, we joyfully and unconditionally welcome all people of any age, gender, sexual orientation, race, culture, ability or social or economic status into our community of faith. We affirm the humanity of all people as unique individuals made in God's image. We also affirm the special gifts that each person has to offer. We invite all to participate in the full life of the church and covenant of our Christian community.

Mission, Vision, Core Values
and Guiding Principles

Mission: The mission of the Avon Congregational Church is to enable people to know Godís unconditional love and to be a community of faith helping one another to live as Jesus Christ lived and taught.

Vision: We strive to be an open, caring, and growing community.  As we explore new and proven spiritual pathways, we encourage one another to discover our unique significance in Godís world.  We worship, work and celebrate together joyfully.  Using our gifts to reach out to others, we endeavor to create a world of compassion, peace and justice.

Core Values and Guiding Principles: As we journey down our spiritual paths, our members will be guided by the following core values and principles:

Compassionate Caring - ACC is a community that supports one another, in times of trial and in times of triumph.

Openness - ACC welcomes all seekers by creating an accepting, inclusive and non-judgmental culture.

Fellowship - ACC offers us abundant and varied ways to come together as a Christ-centered community.

Celebration - In worship and in daily life, we joyfully celebrate Godís creation and the opportunities, challenges and blessings we have been given.

Spiritual Growth - ACC encourages us to explore traditional and non-traditional spiritual practices so that we might discover our unique call from God.

Participation - ACC provides opportunities to use our gifts, passions, musical and other creative talents to lead and support the congregationís vital ministries.

Service to Others - We affirm that our commitment to our own church must be balanced with our social responsibility to all humanity.

Risk-taking - ACC is a dynamic, innovative and courageous church that embraces and initiates change.
